Now offering apprenticeships for language learners and teachers

  • Learn with us.

Join Language Teacher Toolbox as we work to develop best practices for Indigenous Language Revitalization as we collaborate closely with local language learners, speakers, and Elders. We’ll participate in daily activities with each program we visit including lessons and immersion activities. During our time with each community, we’ll support them in their programming and problem solving.

  • Travel with us.

Join Language Teacher Toolbox as we travel to different communities and gain first-hand experience visiting a variety of Indigenous language programs. Each community has developed different strategies to address their own language needs and goals. Apprentices will visit with multiple communities to build a broader view and approach to their own language work.

  • Bring it home.

Language Teacher Toolbox is looking for apprentices who will bring their experience home with them, either to their own communities or in their roles as allies who support Indigenous language work. If you are someone who is looking for more tools, methodologies and strategies to use in your work with Indigenous languages, we encourage you to apply for our apprenticeship program.

Frequently Asked Questions about LTT’s Apprenticeship Program

  • Our first apprenticeships will be offered in the summer of 2026 from May 11th - August 28th.

We aim to offer apprenticeships throughout the year, in the summer (May - August), fall (September - December), and spring (January - April), however the number of apprenticeships we can offer is dependent on our funding. Apprenticeships will typically be 4 months long, but we hope to offer longer apprenticeships in the future.

If you are interested in an apprenticeship either in the summer or at another time in the year, there is a place to indicate that on our application.

  • We are based in British Columbia, Canada. This year (2026-2027) our apprenticeships will primarily take place in BC, mostly in coastal communities on Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii.

Apprentices will travel with our team for scheduled visits to at least 2 communities during their apprenticeship. Current visits scheduled for 2026-2027 include visits to Port Hardy, Ucluelet, Port Alberni, and Old Massett with the possibility of other communities to be confirmed.

We welcome people from all over to apply for our apprenticeships. We are looking for a diverse group of apprentices, including language learners & teachers from Indigenous communities in BC and beyond.

  • This apprenticeship is a short-term, paid position that covers a full-time work week (40 hours) plus any additional travel days.

Apprentices will often have the option to engage in other language-learning and community-building activities after hours and on the weekend, but these activities are not considered part of the work week.

In addition to their wages, apprentices’ travel will be covered as part of the program and housing and meals will be provided for the duration of each community visit.

  • Yes. We hope that the connections apprentices make with other visitors and with the local language teams will extend beyond their apprenticeship, building a network of support for others doing language work into the future. Additionally, we will offer monthly follow-up meetings with current and former apprentices and community members to bolster connections and support.

Apprentices may also have the option to return for additional or extended apprenticeships through LTT or a partner organization.

  • We are collaborating with local language programs in the communities that we visit in British Columbia. These partners include First Nations in Port Hardy, Ucluelet, Port Alberni and Old Massett.

Our current LTT apprenticeship program grew out of the internship program led for many years by Where Are Your Keys (WAYK). Language Teacher Toolbox and our local language partners are working with WAYK on these apprenticeships. Apprentices will receive training in the WAYK methodology as part of the LTT program.

Expectations for our Apprenticeship Program

Our goal is to build strong communities of learners. These communities depend on everyone being present for each other, holding each other up, and being open to each other. With this in mind, we ask all participants in the apprenticeship program to read and commit to the following expectations:

We ask you to be present.

  • When you’re here, be focused on the work that we are doing together.

  • You are required to be present and on time everyday. This is the best way to get the most out of the apprenticeship experience.

  • We ask all apprentices to prioritize the host community's language and projects as the main focus during the apprentices' visit.

  • Be mindful that what you do outside of the apprenticeship program impacts what we do within the program.

  • This apprenticeship requires a serious commitment of time and energy. We want to be clear about the commitment with anyone who is considering applying for an apprenticeship.

We ask you to be open.

  • We ask all apprentices to be open to learning new skills and new strategies.

  • All apprentices are expected to be open to learning the language of our host communities. Immersion in local projects and languages is a primary goal of this apprenticeship.

  • We ask you to be respectful of the past and current decisions made by host communities. Everyone is making the best decisions they can in the moment, often with a variety of constraints.

  • We work hard to develop our schedule in advance of the program, but life and language can be unpredictable at times. We ask apprentices to be flexible and understanding of any changes that we may have to make.

  • In language learning, mistakes are inevitable. Help us celebrate our mistakes. Help us use mistakes to direct our language learning and our growth as a team that is learning together.

We ask you to help build the circle. Be bold. Bring people in.

  • There will be times when we’re just observing what’s happening in the programs we visit, but those times are rare. Much more often we will be active participants.

  • We ask all apprentices to be willing to participate, volunteer, take turns leading, help with a new idea, and dive into our shared work.

  • All apprentices are expected to treat everyone (fellow apprentices, visiting team, and host community members) with kindness and respect.

  • We ask everyone to listen and be generous with their interpretations.

In addition to the above, we have some expectations specifically designed to ensure our presence doesn’t distract or detract from the existing programming of the host communities we’ll be working with.

  • Housing will be provided for visiting apprentices. Everyone is expected to be respectful of shared space, quiet hours, and the “Meadow” in our housing and at our work sites.

  • We ask that all apprentices and visiting team members keep our shared housing “dry” (i.e., no drugs or alcohol will be allowed on the premises). The same is true for the language spaces in the host communities.

  • New romantic relationships between members of the team or between the visiting team and home team are strongly discouraged during the program.

  • All visiting team participants are expected to participate in cooking, cleaning, and chores in our shared housing.

  • We will have limited space in our shared housing in each community. We cannot accommodate additional visitors during the project.

  • We ask interns to be mindful of anything else that could distract or detract from the project. This could include new or existing projects that pull focus from language.

  • Be mindful about how you represent the program both in person and online. Ask peers before you post them on social media.

  • We document the language work with communities and the work of our apprenticeships with audio and video recordings as well as photographs. Apprentices must sign a media release for LTT, for each community they visit, and for related collaborating entities.

  • We will ask interns to share reflections on their experiences throughout their apprenticeship.

  • Meetings and interviews during the hiring process and orientation will be recorded and archived for the team’s reference.

  • We expect the apprentice team to act with integrity and respect towards each other and our partner communities and their languages. It is possible that, if our presence becomes a detriment, a member of our team (or our whole team) may need to leave the program early.
